When did the Rumba Resort open?
Rumba Beach Resort opened on August 1, 2009.

Whose initial idea was it?
Rumba Resort is the latest collaboration between two of the Sunshine Coast Resort’s most respected families – the Bevacqua family and the Henzell family. Between them they have a direct association with Caloundra spanning well over a century. It is their love of the location and their commitment to the local community that has been the driving force behind Rumba.

By working in consultation with the community, Nick and Michael Bevacqua and Roy and Julie Henzell have once again been the catalyst for the kind of iconic property development from which the whole community will benefit. Sustainable, practical and environmentally sensitive projects have been this partnership’s foundation. Rumba is the jewel in the crown.

I understand that Rumba is the only AAA rated five star resort in the area. How does one qualify for this rating?
Star rating assessments are carried out annually by the regulating body, AAA Tourism. Using a points system, properties must earn a minimum of 910 out of a possible 1000 points for a 5 star rating. As categories cover such a broad range and demand such a high standard, this is very difficult to achieve. Rumba is the first property to be awarded a 5 star rating in Caloundra.

What would you say would be the most exciting thing about the resort?
Rumba’s point of difference is that it delivers far more than just a room. Being located on the waterfront in the heart of Caloundra’s CBD, guests experience a holiday where they can walk everywhere or simply enjoy all the resort’s on-site facilities. Rumba’s pool deck is a feature of the property. Boasting views across to Bribie Island, kids can enjoy the pool whilst parents are seated around the pool bar with afternoon cocktails and relaxing jazz music in the background.

With the Sunshine Coast’s largest Jacuzzi spa and a unique glass bottomed heated pool, the pool deck is popular both day and night.

How is success rated in this Industry and how does the resort compare to those ratings?
With the exception of industry awards that Rumba is to new to have participated in as yet, the best barometer of success is occupancy levels and the ratio of repeat business. On both counts Rumba excels. Since opening, guest occupancy has been consistently high with some months exceeding 90%. Repeat bookings have also been strong with the up-coming Easter and Christmas periods substantially booked up in advance with repeat guests.

Where do most of the guests come from?
Caloundra has historically catered to the drive market from Brisbane and this is Rumba’s strongest market segment. For 2010, we are spreading our marketing focus not only to interstate, but international markets through a number of specialist inbound tourism promoters. We see the Sunshine Coast as an important destination in the international marketplace and Rumba Resort ticks all the boxes for the quintessential Aussie beach holiday experience. The building design and all of its amenities were carefully considered to cater to the luxury resort Caloundra travel market.

What size function can you hold in the function room?

The Rumba Room has the capacity to hold functions and events of various sizes. Total internal floor area is 177sq metres theatre seating for 130 delegates, banquet seating for 110, classroom seating for 70, u shape 40 delegates. The external breakout areas consist of an additional 117sq metres of usable space. The Rumba Room has a 3 metre ceiling height along with high definition data projector,16:9 projector screen, Bose in ceiling sound system, picture rail, wireless internet connectivity and all necessary audio visual aids to make your event or function a success .

Onsite catering is also part of our service and we pride ourselves on delivering great food to our functions. Our chefs have a passion for using fresh local produce, Mooloolaba seafood, Kenilworth cheeses, Eumundi strawberries, and many other locally grown and produced gourmet foods. We have extensive function menus available to suit all budgets, whether it be a wedding, special occasion or corporate event, we have the food and beverage to suit.

You have a great Wine Bar area, do you get a lot of local frequent that area of the resort?What kind of capacity does it have?
The Rumba Pool bar is open to the public and we encourage the local community and visitors to enjoy the hospitality offered by our friendly bar staff.

Seating capacity for the pool bar is approximately 45 people where visitors can enjoy a cold beer or cocktail. Light meals are always available and once again our friendly bar staff will assist you with your requirements.

What do you think is the reason people keep on coming back?
“Family friendly and great for kids” are comments that we regularly hear from guests. At Rumba we don’t sell rooms, we sell fun. With outstanding beaches, restaurants, pools and of course rooms, families can really unwind and enjoy themselves here. With all the in-room entertainment and pool deck facilities, rain hail or shine, guests leave happy and revitalised.
